Faith, Trust, and a Little Pixie Dust

As you can see, my blog looks quite different than it used to. This is apparent in my deviating from my normal title series, as well as the overall appearance. The reason for this being is that I finally broke down and paid for a WordPress theme, as my coding skills are basically non-existent, and have been for quite a few years now.

This theme, though highly edited, is a theme called Avant, and I am actually using a child theme of Avant, along with some customised CSS coding that I could manage after a bit of a headache. I’m also using a plugin for this theme called “Elementor” for this post. This is my first attempt at using this plugin, and though I’ll admit the customisation abilities for my post are greatly improved, it’s a bit of a learning curve.

As you’ll see with this post, I need to practice a bit with formatting if I continue to use Elementor. That being said, there is something to be said for the post-writing options!

It is my hope that eventually I’ll have the money to take a few courses, even if they have to be online, to become proficient in at least basic coding. I don’t live in an area that offers any kind of workshops, so I have to either teach myself, (somehow), or find enough tutorials and hope I catch on. I’d LOVE to be able to get a second bachelor’s degree, but I can’t even afford the one I’m almost done with. So, for now it’s out of the question. Still, that doesn’t mean I can’t learn on my own, and test for certifications at the very least.

I am about halfway through my first trimester of my final full year as an undergraduate, and as much as my previous post hinted at the difficulty of the current classes I’m in, it was an understatement compared to this week.

I’ve got two very long, very detailed essays due by the end of this week, and honestly, I’m procrastinating badly due to not only being quite tired, but also quite burned out on life in general. However, considering I’ve gotten them both about halfway done, I consider that one hell of an accomplishment for this week.

Luckily, I will be going to my mother’s house Thursday-Monday, and will be able to unwind a bit. Even if her behaviours stress me out to some degree, it’s also strangely a good place for me to study after everyone else heads to bed. I’ll be able to get some writing done, and proofread while there.

Aside from the studies aspect of the last few weeks, I can also say last week I felt completely great about my workout routine, as well as myself. My only concern is of the last few days and my depression starting to kick in bad. It seems that every time I begin to feel better about my life, and working toward a fulfilling future for myself that something always gets me in a very dark place mentally. Often, it is something completely inconsequential, but just enough to cause a downward spiral.

I’ve decided that keeping some sort of “Thought Journal” can only help at this point, if nothing else for me to share my thoughts and feelings when talking to someone won’t do. In fact, talking to others usually worsens my mood lately, as I’ve not been surrounding myself with the right “type” of people. Don’t get me wrong, they’re not specifically doing anything one might consider “bad”, but they’re not necessarily good for my mental well-being.

Upcoming: April Planning

I’m currently planning for a camping trip across state, taking place May 4th-8th, at a Texas state park called Possum Kingdom Lake. It’s quite popular during the spring and summer months. While I am looking forward to the change of scenery, and the camping, I am not looking forward to the mosquitos and heat. I’ll get some beautiful pictures out of the trip, regardless.

This particular camping trip is somewhat of a “family reunion” for my maternal family. Despite not getting along with them much, I’d like for my daughter to be able to enjoy seeing family that she rarely gets to mingle with. That being said, I don’t know how many of you have ever tried to take a 5 year old camping in 100+ degree heat, but it usually involves a lot of whining and dramatics. I’m trying to be preemptive and order a few battery-powered fans, as well as some easily done tent activities for her.

The end of April will see the aforementioned difficult classes coming to a close, only to begin two more classes while still on my camping trip. (Thank God for the development of cellular hotspots) Emma will also have school while we are camping, but only for two days. I definitely plan on taking the camping trip as an opportunity to do some fun science-related topics to incorporate into her schooling.

I am the Secretary for my university’s Outdoor Club, and with this month being a very ecological-minded month due to Earth Day, our entire club has been working on activities and information for all university students. This got me thinking about how I could do more in my home to help institute environmentally friendly practices. My husband and I have decided to attempt to plant a few trees, and though we will be moving before they grow much, perhaps over the next year we will have cared for them enough to take root and withstand this awful climate. I’d also like to buy a few hard-to-kill house plants to freshen up my home, and purify the air some.

Health and Lifestyle

I’ve not had to buy new jeans yet, which is quite the let down. However, I did have to buy a smaller size of athletic pants when going shopping for gym clothing, and that made me feel fairly good for a moment! I do, overall, feel much healthier in that I’ve not had near as many gastrointestinal issues as before. I also feel quite a bit less lethargic than I did a couple of months ago, and noticed that my headaches are less frequent.

When going to the doctor recently, I did find that I have an early onset of arthritis, which explains previous complaints of joint pain, stiffness, and the occasional locking of my fingers. As awful as that may sound, Naproxen Sodium(Aleve) has drastically helped just in the two weeks I’ve been taking it. I can work out almost double my previous record due to the pain being much less. As I lose weight, my symptoms should ease even more, which just gives me more motivation than previously thought.

Writing: Two term papers…please kill me…

  •  Finish HIS-314 with a B+/A- at least(hopefully an even A)
  • Finish HIS-117 with an A/A+
  • Need to either buy a belt, or finally get to buy a smaller pants size
  • Actually be prepared for a trip for once in my life -.-

I’m digging this theme, girlie! The colours are great! 💖

I’m so happy to hear that you are getting on with your workout routine, go girl! It all pays off in the end. When I started my fitness journey, I was the same with my anxiety – it would get me down at times but I started to fight it and say “No, not today. I’m going to do well today.” and that self-talk really helped me 🙂

Good luck with your studies and have a great April!

Thanks Pauline! It’s hard to get your butt in gear at times, especially when the anxiety is kicking. I hope you have an awesome month as well! =3

Good luck for your goals this month, you can do it !! 😀 I don’t know if you’re going to further your studies after your undergraduate program but the last year is always so intense, I wish it wasn’t but it’d be too good to be true…

I feel you concerning WordPress themes haha! I tried my hand at it several times and it was really meh… I don’t know if you know about it or not but is a nice place with tutorials. I really like the colors of this theme, they’re so soothing!

Going camping in a park sounds like so much fun ! I camped once when I was in China for one night near the desert, it was kinda awful because there was this huge sandstorm at night so we had to move our tents :’) our stuff was filled with sand in the morning, not the best feeling…

Thanks for your comment on my blog! The theme doesn’t include a “reply” button so :(((( I hope you’ll be able to visit France soon! I’d like to visit the USA in the near future as well!

Thanks for stopping by Delphine! I actually really enjoy this theme now that I’ve edited it a bit. It is rather soothing. I believe this theme will probably stick for a while. I want the next theme to be at least mostly my own doing! At least that’s a goal for me, albeit an extensive one. Thanks for the link! I’ll check it out for sure.

I’m loving the way that your blog looks. Very nicely set out and the colors are fabulous. I used to love coding but I haven’t really had the patience so I’ve been buying WordPress themes myself and just editing the CSS to my hearts content.

I’ve been trying to start a workout routine as well. I’m far from being a fitness guru but anything to make me more active, it’s much better than my previous lifestyle. I’m glad that your headaches have diminished. 🙂

Thank you Brandy. I think the colours are pretty easy o nthe eye, and yet still pretty =3
I’m trying like hell to learn at least a little bit of coding. I used to be fairly decent at basic html, and css editing, but I guess not doing it or even thinking about it for 5 or so years really inhibits your memory lol

If my fat butt can do it, you definitely can girl! Let me know if you find an exceptionally good routine 😛

I love this theme! I definitely have to buy one at some point. I always use the free ones, and they’re no nearly as nice. I keep telling myself that I’ll learn to code a nice one myself but my coding skills aren’t nearly good enough. I can barely get all the different elements in the right place!

Congrats on doing well with your workout routine. Mine is still pretty much nonexistent. Hopefully next month you’ll get down a size, but even if you don’t, you should still be so proud of what you’re doing. Good luck!

Thank you amy! I’m hoping for the best with my weight management. Some days I feel like I’m not getting anywhere, others I feel awesome.
I guess it just depends.

As for coding, hopefully we’ll both learn some and make our own themes one day 😂😂

“as my coding skills are basically non-existent, and have been for quite a few years now” LMAO I’m the same way, this sentence felt like a burn. hehe I bought mine as well. I think I have decided that I’m not wanting to really expand my website knowledge. If I go back to classes I want to focus on programming.

I was feeling really good about my workout routine, but then I had to start flaring and – even though I know it is good to still work out some during these flares – it is almost impossible for me to want to get off the couch. I guess it is a bit of a depression issue with it.

Yay! Camping! I haven’t gone in such a long time but I use to go several times over the summer. I would just go to the Frio River though.

You know, I never thought about taking Aleve for my little issues but at the same time I think mine is more tendon and muscle pain so it might not do anything.

BTW, I love the new look. It looks really nice ♥

Thanks Ashley! Yeah the aleve has done wonders but mine is joint pain, not really nerve pain I don’t think. I’d assume aleve would work at least a little though.

I’ve never been to the frio but everyone tells me I have to. Its pretty much the nicest river we have in the state scenery wise.

I’m not sure what your blog looked like before since I’m new here, but I think it currently looks lovely! Super easy to read and I like the little icons that pop up in the text. They’re a fun alternative to plain bulletpoints. And hey, go you for adding some customised CSS coding. I just purchased a theme for my site and have mostly left it as is.

It does suck schooling costs so much! I’d go back in an instant and get another degree if I could, but I definitely have way too much scchool debt to pay off. I actually finally took advantage of one of the skillshare sign-up offers (99 cents for two months, I think?) so have been taking classes on that every day. The classes are a bit hit or miss and you definitely don’t get the in-depth learning of a college degree, but I’ve been enjoying picking up new things here and there.

Wow, it sounds like you have a lot going on! Even if you weren’t a mom (which is hard work in itself), being involved in a club and working on the blog and prepping for a camping trip and goign to classes and working out – it’s exhausting just typing it all. Go you for making it work. I hope you knock those papers out without too much stress and that when the camping trip comes around next month it goes well. <3

Well, the papers are dye tonight and should be able to finish before the deadline.
Thank you very much for stopping by!

Hi Shanae! Thanks for dropping by to my blog 🙂
You site is beautiful! It’s simple, neat and clean 🙂

Have a great time on your upcoming camping! Ohhh! I miss camping too XD Hahahaha! I’m planning to have one 🙂

I had arthritis before too and took me bedridden for a week 🙁 it was so painful I can’t move my whole body! I can’t even use my phone coz my hand joints are so much in pain 🙁 I was asked for a diet as well and foods that I should stay away. The only medicine I drink is a pain reliever whenever I feel pain. So far there is still pain whenever I wake up from sleep but then it’s gone through out the day.

cmiiw but i never noticed you’ve always been on wordpress until now! i like this theme though; it’s simple and elegant. i remember when i was on wp back then – making a custom theme was crazy intense and i’d be coding for one whole day straight. ugh, i’m so thankful i’m on blogger now despite the lack of theme options (blogger themes on etsy tend to be so similar to each other unlike wordpress ones which are more creative but also more expensive – like $40 / theme wth)

i used to keep a thought journal too through the reflectly app but then i forgot about it because it’s starting to feel like a routine and i don’t enjoy it anymore. i feel restricted. i guess in the end, keeping a real life diary or journal was never gonna be my thing.

the thought of developing arthritis kind of scares me because i can see it happening to me. my hands, especially my right one, get hurt and strained so easily because i’m 24/7 on the computer, using a mouse. it has gotten to the point where sometimes i have to carry around an analgesic pain relief cream with me. my supervisor told me to take breaks more often, to play with the stress ball so i won’t develop joint pain or bad shape :\
i really don’t want to rely on meds so… 🙁

This is a lovely new theme. I, too, would definitely fork over the money for a paid theme because I don’t have the time or energy to code my theme from scratch like I used to in the past. So good on you for the new theme.

Good luck with your schooling. Hope you conquered those essays despite procrastinating a bit! I did that all the time and the panic towards the end helped me churn out the words.

Hope your April is going all right so far!

Love the new theme!! Seems like there’s a lot of stress in your life right now, but hopefully little by little you’ll be able to work through them!
If you are interested in learning coding for free, I recommend . And the #100DaysOfCode challenge I did They provide a lot of resources and free help for newbies so you don’t have to go out and get a degree or pay!

And welcome to arthritis land. Glad Aleve is helping! At one point I was taking 4 pills a day just to get out of bed for a few months. Now I’m down to 1 a day along with chemo, because my arthritis is an autoimmune disorder. Hope your weight loss will help with the pain, too!! And collagen!

Good luck with everything and school! You’re almost at the end of the semester!!

Thanks Hiro! Someone pointed me to a site called TheOdinProject yesterday, and it seems like a good base to start. I feel like between Odin and your 100daysofcode suggestion I may just get a decent enough crash course to put me on a good track.

The new theme looks nice! The colors are very soothing!

Oohh, I haven’t heard of Possum Kingdom Lake, but I just looked it up, and it looks beautiful. I feel you on the heat and mosquitoes though (somehow mosquitoes are always more attracted to me). I hope it’ll still be a fun trip!

I’m glad you’re feeling good about your workout routine too! It can be discouraging when you don’t see immediate affects on your clothing size, but I think that’s great that you’re already seeing other health benefits. The other changes will come with time!

Sorry to hear about the early onset of arthritis though. I hope it’s not too bad, and that’s good that medication is helping at least. Good luck on your classes and coursework!

I think we’re going to end up going to Lake Nasworthy in San Angelo instead due to financial and time constraints. There’s still a few scenic spots there, though.
